A 50-year-old man has been jailed for 18 months after being caught with an unlicensed firearm he claimed he was on his way to surrender under a national gun amnesty.

Ed Archibald, of Old Runaway, was stopped by police on patrol along Thames Street on Saturday evening. Officers found a black Ruger .380 pistol and six rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Archibald pleaded guilty to the charges on Tuesday.

His lawyer, Leon Symister, told the court his client intended to hand over the weapon to police as part of the country’s ongoing amnesty programme.

However, Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel imposed an 18-month sentence for the firearm offence and a concurrent six-month term for ammunition possession, citing standard sentencing guidelines.
