The Office of the Ecclesiastical Commission of Antigua and Barbuda has extended its New Year’s greetings for 2025, reaffirming its commitment to fostering national unity and moral integrity through its religious initiatives. The Commission, a Cabinet-appointed body representing various Christian denominations, has outlined key national events for the year while emphasizing the need for the church to remain steadfast in its spiritual and societal role.
The Ecclesiastical Commission highlighted its focus on four core areas concerning the nation’s moral and religious life: the National Independence Thanksgiving Church Service, National Family Month, the National Day of Prayer, and National Representation of the Church in Government-related services.
As part of its 2025 agenda, the Commission announced the following national events:
- Annual National Day of Prayer
- The first event will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, to coincide with the Antigua Christian Council’s prayer services, marking the start of the hurricane season.
- A second National Day of Prayer and March is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2025.
- Family Month in May
- The Commission will host a panel discussion to address challenges facing traditional biblical family values.
- Public schools, both primary and secondary, will receive visits from pastors, ministers, and chaplains sharing biblical messages on the importance of strong families.
- A national schools’ debate on contemporary gender issues is also anticipated.
- National Independence Thanksgiving Church Service
- As Antigua and Barbuda marks 44 years of independence in 2025, the Commission will organize a national thanksgiving service.
- Efforts are underway to encourage greater participation from pastors, parishioners, and the wider public.
- A 100-member interdenominational choir is also being planned to enhance attendance and engagement.
The Ecclesiastical Commission reaffirmed its A-political stance, noting that it serves as a bridge between the Christian community and the government rather than a government entity. The Commission aims to advocate for moral integrity and justice while promoting cooperation among Antigua and Barbuda’s major Christian organizations, including:
- Antigua Christian Council
- Antigua and Barbuda Evangelical Alliance
- Association of Independent Churches
- Southern Leeward Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
- Baptist communities
In its message, the Commission encouraged citizens to reflect on their spiritual journey and national responsibilities, citing biblical references to emphasize faithfulness and commitment to moral values.
With the dawn of 2025, the Commission called for greater synergy among denominations and churches, seeking to address pressing religious and societal issues with a unified voice. The leadership of the Ecclesiastical Commission also sought prayers for wisdom and discernment in carrying out its mandate.
On behalf of the Commission’s Executive, Chairman Rev. Dr. Emanuel Elizée, along with representatives from various Christian groups, wished the nation a “Spirit-filled, Christ-honoring, and prosperous year.”
