‘Duplicitous Behavior’: Senator Browne Critiques Opposition’s Budget Debate Approach
Senator Colin Oneal Browne criticised opposition members during the 2025 Budget Debate in Parliament, accusing them of what he called “duplicitous behavior” in their approach to discussions.
He challenged their claims about economic hardships and urged a more constructive and truthful contribution to the debate.
Browne said opposition senators were misleading the public by portraying an overly negative view of Antigua and Barbuda’s economic situation.
“Some people come to this house to terrorize it,” he said.
“We stand on the truth, and the truth must always prevail.” He called on members to engage in meaningful debate rather than resorting to tactics he described as disruptive.
The senator rejected opposition claims that citizens were not experiencing the benefits of economic recovery. He referred to examples such as rising employment opportunities, increased visitor arrivals, and improvements in public infrastructure.
“They say the poor man doesn’t feel it, but look at the statistics,” Browne said.
“We have taxi drivers in the six-figure club, new jobs created through tourism projects, and duty-free concessions helping individuals and businesses alike.”
He also criticised what he described as contradictory behaviour by some opposition figures, accusing them of undermining the government while benefiting from its policies.
“The sky is not falling in this country,” he said. “Antigua and Barbuda is moving forward, but some people want to vilify the government even as it works hard in everyone’s interest.”
Browne’s remarks were made as Parliament continues to debate the 2025 budget. The government has described the budget as a plan for resilience and growth, while the opposition has raised concerns about its impact on vulnerable populations.
The senator called on his counterparts to focus on practical solutions, adding that divisive rhetoric would not benefit the nation. His comments reflect the government’s stance on countering criticism and outlining its vision for the country’s future.
