Rape and Sexual Assault Cases Drop Amid Rising Crime Levels in Antigua and Barbuda

Reported cases of rape and indecent assault in Antigua and Barbuda saw a significant decline in 2024, according to the Royal Police Force. However, the overall crime rate rose sharply, reflecting a mixed picture of public safety in the country.

Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney revealed the statistics during a news conference, describing the year as one of “challenges and progress.” Reported rapes fell from 40 in 2023 to 25 in 2024, while cases of indecent assault dropped from 25 to 17 over the same period.

Despite these improvements, other crime categories showed alarming increases. Reports of aggravated robberies rose from 9 in 2023 to 28 last year, and robberies jumped from 19 to 140 cases. Overall crime increased by 17%, with more than 3,600 incidents recorded.

Commissioner Rodney attributed many reports to domestic disputes and a lack of conflict resolution skills. He appealed to the public to address these underlying issues, saying, “We must work together as a community to save our young lives.”

Fire safety success

There was good news in fire safety, with house fires dropping from 88 in 2023 to 65 last year—a decrease of 18%. Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivian Parker, who heads the fire department, credited public education campaigns for the improvement.

“Our fire prevention unit has worked tirelessly, delivering lectures and training sessions at schools, hotels, and on radio programmes to raise awareness,” Parker said.

Traffic collisions rise

In contrast, traffic-related injuries rose significantly. Over 400 people were hurt in road accidents in 2024, including 114 serious injuries. Traffic Head Elson Kwami called the figures “a wake-up call” and urged drivers to exercise greater caution.

Police officials say they plan to build on the progress made in 2024 while tackling areas of concern. However, they emphasised that public cooperation is crucial. “Safety starts with the community,” Commissioner Rodney concluded.
