Sir Curtly Ambrose Honoured with Doctor of Laws by UWI Five Islands Campus

Today, cricket legend Sir Curtly Ambrose was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of the West Indies (UWI) at its Five Islands Campus during a special graduation ceremony.

The award recognizes his remarkable contributions to West Indies cricket and his ongoing impact on both the sport and his community.

The citation presented at the ceremony highlighted Ambrose’s journey from humble beginnings in the village of Swetes, Antigua, to becoming one of the most fearsome fast bowlers in international cricket.

His mother, Millie Ambrose, played a key role in his life, encouraging his passion for cricket from a young age. Ambrose began playing softball cricket at the age of eight and went on to attend the All Saints Secondary School, where his talent flourished.

As his career advanced, Ambrose’s exceptional skill with the ball became evident, particularly after he joined the West Indies cricket team in 1988. Known for his silence on the field, Ambrose allowed his bowling to speak for him.

His achievements include 405 wickets in 98 Test matches and 225 wickets in 176 One Day Internationals. Some of his most iconic performances include taking seven wickets for one run against Australia in Perth (1992-93) and bowling England out for 46 runs in Trinidad in 1994.

Beyond cricket, Ambrose has embraced new challenges, participating in Australia’s Dancing with the Stars in 2019 and showcasing his talent as a musician with the band Spirited.

His passion for music, rooted in his time singing in the church choir, has become another significant aspect of his life, alongside his deep love for his family.

The UWI citation celebrated Ambrose as a multifaceted individual—an accomplished cricketer, musician, entertainer, and dedicated family man. His commitment to promoting Antigua and Barbuda, his involvement in cricket coaching, and his contributions to West Indies cricket were all recognized during the ceremony.

With the honorary degree now conferred upon him, Sir Curtly Ambrose joins an illustrious group of individuals celebrated for their achievements and contributions to Caribbean society.
