Court Grants Final Adjournment in Chantel Crump Case

A magistrate has given prosecutors a final, short extension in the case against Angela Mejia, who is charged in connection with the killing of 9-year-old Chantel Crump.
During a court appearance Wednesday, Mejia’s attorney, Wendel Alexander, applied for the matter to be thrown out, arguing that the delay in advancing the case amounts to a failure to prosecute. He said the prolonged proceedings, coupled with the intense public scrutiny surrounding the case, have unfairly affected his client.
Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel rejected the application to dismiss but allowed one last adjournment. The court was informed that the case file is with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Crump’s body was discovered in the Weatherills area on March 15, 2025, days after she was reportedly taken near her home by a woman in a vehicle.
Mejia has been on remand since her first court appearance and remains in custody.
