The Mehul Choksi extradition case has moved closer to a final decision after the Antwerp Court of Appeal in Belgium recommended his return to India on six of seven charges linked to a major banking fraud.
Choksi, a former Gitanjali Gems promoter who fled India in 2018, is accused of orchestrating a ₹13,000 crore fraud involving fraudulent banking instruments issued by Punjab National Bank.
The court rejected his claims of political persecution and risk of torture, finding no supporting evidence. India has assured Belgian authorities of proper detention conditions and medical care.
The final decision now rests with Belgium’s Interior Ministry, which is expected to rule within weeks.
