Senator Joseph Highlights Landfill Modernization Efforts

A consultant from Essex with over 15 years of experience has been brought in to develop a plan for modernizing the landfill, Senator Michael Joseph announced during the budget debate. “The plan includes reducing the landfill size, introducing waste diversion methods, and using modern technology to minimize fire risks and improve efficiency,” he said.

“We have invested $3 million in new assets for the NSWMA, including 10 garbage trucks, an excavator, a backhoe, a Delta truck, and two mini excavators,” Senator Joseph stated. “These investments are critical to improving waste collection and management across the country.”

Addressing drainage improvements, Senator Joseph said, “Drain cleaning efforts have been ramped up significantly, with some drains in Donovan’s being cleared for the first time in 15 to 20 years.”

On playground development, he added, “A new playground will be installed in Five Islands by April 2025. This project is part of our broader commitment to creating safe recreational spaces for children.”

Regarding disaster preparedness, he said, “We have partnered with the National Office of Disaster Services to repair the bridge in Golden Grove and address longstanding flooding issues caused by inadequate drainage systems.”

“Our goal is to ensure that every citizen benefits from improved services and infrastructure,” Senator Joseph concluded. “This is about creating a safer, cleaner, and more resilient Antigua and Barbuda.”
