LET’S ALL DEMONSTRATE THE VIRTUE OF LOVE
………….By Audley Phillip
2024 has been particularly painful for us all. There has been a stream of deaths, criminal activities and tragedies that brought great pain and misery to us
Death is an unfortunate reality in this imperfect life and it comes to all of us.
The latter part of the year has been particularly difficult. We have endured the horrific murder of little Achaiza James whose gruesome body was found at Runaway Beach. There’s still no closure to that situation. A beloved woman and friend to many, Donna-Marie Christian disappeared and still no traces of her in a country less than 10 X 11 square miles.
In more recent times, we have witnessed the passing of very notable persons in our country, some of whom have sent shock waves throughout the length and breadth of Antigua and Barbuda. MP Asot Michael, noted and famed Attorney Dane Hamilton, Pastor Dr. Cedric Forbes, Ivor Bird, Vernon Edwards Jr and Commissioner Alvin Goodwin are the names that immediately come to mind.
All these deaths and disasters in such a short space of time underscores just how fragile life is and how easy death can knock at our doors.
The stark reality is, for some of us, this might be our last Christmas. Life is indeed short and death is quick.
As a small nation, I am therefore appealing to one and all to exercise and show more love to each other. We spend so much time bashing each other over simple and meaningless things.
Love does not keep an account of wrongs, love is not irritable or resentful. Love does not insist on its own way. Love is not boastful and calls others names. Love is not arrogant. Love is kind and patient.
Instead of continuing to fight and squabble over trivial things, let’s begin to show each other love and be positive examples to all . Let us truly demonstrate the virtues of love in our homes, schools, communities and yes, in Parliament.
Death is the one thing that puts us all on a level playing field. The cemetery has no VIP section whatsoever. It is in death that we are all equal.
The Bible says that all the days ordained for us were written in the book before one of them came to be – Psalm 139:16 God knows absolutely everything about us including when, where and how we will die. It’s one appointment we all have to keep whether we are prepared or not for it.
I dearly love my country and its people and I hope that in the coming year we can all be transformed by the abundant love of God and become a people far more concerned with offering love and forgiveness and seeking reconciliation instead of promoting the hurtful anger that we continually hold towards each other. Life is not about how many people we can knock down but how many we can lift up.
I want to use this opportunity to wish you and your family a season of peace, love, profusion, prosperity and good health in 2025.
