Chinese Corporation Donates over 250 Pounds of Vegetables to Local Institutions
Story by Brent Simon.
In a continued display of partnership and support, the Chinese government, through the Long Ping High Tech Corporation, donated about 250 pounds of fresh vegetables to six local institutions on January 3rd, 2025.
The brief yet impactful event, took place at the Agricultural Extension Division and was attended by the recipients, the Chinese delegation, and several representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture such as, Mr. Walter Christopher/ Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Maudvere Bradford/Senior Research Officer, Mr. Ika Fergus /Chief Extension Officer (ag), and Miss Anika Aska/ Extension Officer (ag). in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy.
The donation included eighty (80) pounds of lettuce, one hundred and twenty (120) pounds of Chinese lettuce, fifty (5)0 pounds of cucumbers, and fifty (50) pounds of seasoning pepper. Each of the six recipients received an equal amount of the produce. The beneficiaries were:
Beverly Comfort Home
Moravian Elderly Home
Habitat Feeding Programme
Clearview Hospital
Fiennes Institute
Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force
These vegetables were not ordinary crops; they were the product of some experimental farming carried out by the donator. Grown entirely outdoors and as naturally as possible, the vegetables represent a significant step in sustainable and innovative agricultural practices.
This method minimizes the use of synthetic inputs while maximizing yield and quality, demonstrating the viability of eco-friendly farming techniques in Antigua’s environment.
The donation underscores the ongoing partnership between the nation and the Chinese government. It again highlights the shared commitment to advancing agriculture and supporting communities.
These efforts reflect a broader goal of enhancing local food security and promoting healthy eating, and they also showcased the success of experimental farming that could help to meet the nutritional needs of some of our more vulnerable groups.
As part of these efforts the Ministry of Agriculture is creating a database of institutions to streamline future distributions. By identifying key beneficiaries, such as the ABDF and community care facilities, the Ministry aims to maximize the reach and efficiency of similar initiatives.
This donation is another testament to the power of innovation, sustainability and collaboration. It exemplifies how agricultural advancements can directly benefit communities and contribute to a healthier, more resilient nation.
