Caribbean Unions Lauded for Strength and Strategy

The General Secretary of the International Union of Food, Agriculture, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF), Sue Longley, recently praised the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) for its exceptional organizing efforts in the local hotel industry.

Longley’s commendation came during the IUF’s Hotels, Restaurants, Catering, and Tourism (HRCT) Trade Board meeting, held at ABWU Headquarters in St. John’s on Wednesday.

She highlighted the impressive union density within Antigua’s hotel sector, noting that it could serve as an inspiring model for unions across the Caribbean.

Longley added that Caribbean unions have been resilient and continue to make notable strides, despite facing challenges. “I think these islands are small but powerful: the unions here punch above their weight,” Longley said.

She went on to commend regional unions for their strategic use of political leverage and effective engagement with governments to safeguard workers’ rights.

The HRCT Trade Board Meetings bring together more than 10 unions worldwide, spanning regions and territories including Japan, Fiji, Nigeria, Spain, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Denmark, Bermuda and Barbados
