Prime Minister Gaston Browne says he will take a proposal to Cabinet for an amnesty for disconnected customers of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority after the issue was raised during Saturday’s Browne and Browne Show.
The commitment followed a WhatsApp message asking whether households cut off from electricity or water services due to unpaid bills could receive relief. Browne said he would place the matter before Cabinet next week.
No details of the proposed amnesty were outlined.
The move could affect a large number of households across Antigua and Barbuda and comes as part of a wider set of relief measures announced ahead of the general election, including a minimum wage increase, a 5% public sector pay rise, pension adjustments and efforts to clear retroactive payments.
