St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hinted at a closer relationship between newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries, and the Blue Economy, Anthony Smith Jr., and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

While Smith remains an independent member of parliament, Browne expressed optimism about future collaborations.

“I am quite sure that there will be other opportunities for him to have an even closer nexus with the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party,” Browne stated, leaving the door open for deeper integration in the future.

When pressed further about what he had in mind for Smith, browne stated: “I don’t necessarily want to make any precise pronouncements at this point but I know you’re very imaginative person and the others out there who can probably figure it out.”

“I don’t want to say anything that will undermine his Independence uh clearly he’s an independent Member of Parliament and I know that they are opportunistic persons so looking for the opportunity to suit to say that he’s not independent.

“So all I’m saying at this point is that I’m quite sure that going forward there will be a closer Nexus to the labor party and that there’ll be other opportunities to be exploited,” Browne said.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Browne expressed his confidence in Smith’s abilities and potential to contribute significantly to the government’s initiatives.

“Anthony Smith Jr. is a young man in his 30s, and we are committed to putting our succession planning in place,” Browne stated.

He emphasized the importance of bringing in new, energetic talent to complement the party’s experienced members.

Browne acknowledged the challenges Smith faced in his previous political environment, describing it as “toxic” and not conducive to growth. He praised Smith’s decision to transition to a more stable and supportive environment within the ABLP, where he could better serve his constituents.

“This transition allows Smith to utilize his potential fully and align with the values of transparency, accountability, and good governance that our administration upholds,” Browne added.

Highlighting the strategic move, Browne noted that Smith’s appointment is part of a broader effort to ensure the party’s longevity and effectiveness.

The Prime Minister also assured that Smith would receive the necessary guidance and mentorship to develop his political career.

He committed to prioritizing the development of the All Saints West constituency, ensuring that Smith’s constituents benefit from improved infrastructure and resources.
