The government of Antigua and Barbuda has unveiled plans to rejuvenate agricultural production in Barbuda, focusing on key crops such as coconuts and peanuts, while also promoting ornamental plant cultivation.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne emphasized the administration’s commitment to diversifying the island’s economy and strengthening food security.
Speaking on a local radio program, the Prime Minister detailed plans to expand agricultural activities in Barbuda, which has been recovering steadily since the devastation of Hurricane Irma in 2017.
“Barbuda has significant potential to contribute to national food security. We are looking to scale up coconut and peanut farming on the island,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also highlighted plans to establish a nursery for ornamental plants, which will support beautification projects across the twin islands.
“We aim to develop nurseries in Barbuda to produce ornamental plants for landscaping along our major highways and public spaces,” he added.
This initiative is expected to complement the island’s growing reputation as a luxury destination, following its inclusion in Frommer’s list of the best places to visit in 2025.
The government is positioning Barbuda not only as a premier tourist destination but also as a vital contributor to the nation’s agricultural resilience.
“We are committed to making Barbuda a hub of agricultural innovation and environmental sustainability,” the Prime Minister noted, adding that infrastructure projects like the expanded airport will further boost Barbuda’s development and connectivity.
The revitalization of coconut and peanut farming is part of a broader strategy to enhance the island’s self-sufficiency and economic resilience.
The government has encouraged private sector involvement and local farmers to take advantage of these new opportunities, with ongoing support and guidance from national agricultural agencies.
Barbuda’s agricultural revival underscores the government’s focus on sustainable development and long-term economic growth for the twin islands.
