Barbuda Council Chairman Refutes Senator Knacyntar Charles’s Claims

In a statement released on January 27, 2025, Barbuda Council Chairman firmly addressed allegations made by Senator Knacyntar Charles regarding his alleged silence on the proposed development of the Katel Hill/Louis Hill area.

Senator Charles had accused the Chairman of failing to oppose the government’s plans during a meeting held last Thursday. However, the Chairman labeled these claims as “misleading and unfounded.”

Providing clarity, the Chairman explained that the meeting in question, held on January 23, 2025, focused exclusively on discussions surrounding the Steve Morgan Foundation’s efforts to rebuild homes for Barbudans affected by Hurricane Irma.

The meeting had no connection to the government’s proposed development of Katel Hill/Louis Hill.

Among the attendees were representatives from the Ministry of Barbuda Affairs, the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Finance, and CHAPA, as well as members of the Steve Morgan Foundation.

The Chairman emphasized that discussions during the meeting revolved around managing funds donated by the Steve Morgan Foundation. “At no point during the meeting was the government’s proposed development project at Katel Hill/Louis Hill discussed,” he asserted.

He further criticized Senator Charles’s public remarks, calling them “very disingenuous” and highlighting that the meeting minutes shared by the Senator made no reference to the alleged development plans.

The Chairman reiterated that any major decisions or projects would need to be presented to the Barbuda Council for review and approval—a process with which Senator Charles had reportedly agreed during the meeting.

Reaffirming his commitment to the people of Barbuda, the Chairman stated that his role is not to make unilateral decisions but to ensure that development decisions align with the collective will of the Barbuda Council and the community.

The statement concluded with a call for stakeholders to engage in “accurate and constructive dialogue” to foster collaboration for Barbuda’s benefit.
