Authorities Plan Remote Medical Booking System for Barbuda Residents

The government is planning to introduce a digital booking system that would allow Barbuda residents to schedule medical appointments in Antigua without making repeated trips between the two islands.
The initiative forms part of a broader healthcare upgrade approved by Cabinet for the Hannah Thomas Hospital and other medical services on Barbuda.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing that the Ministry of Health will collaborate with the Ministry of Information Technology to develop the new system.

According to Merchant, the platform is intended to make it easier for Barbudans to access specialized healthcare services in Antigua, including MRIs, X-rays and other diagnostic appointments.
“So currently what happens, Barbudans will have to travel to Antigua to make appointments, then they return to Barbuda to await the date for their appointments, then they travel back to Antigua for those appointments,” Merchant explained.
He said the proposed system would allow residents to remain in Barbuda while completing the necessary paperwork and booking procedures remotely before travelling only when the appointment date arrives.
The planned booking system was announced alongside other healthcare improvements for Barbuda, including the return of childbirth services to Hannah Thomas Hospital and the introduction of laboratory services aimed at reducing the need for routine medical travel to Antigua.
