Antigua’s Top Athletes and Officials to Be Honoured at 2024 National Sports Awards

The 2024 National Sports Awards will take place on Saturday evening at the Royalton Resort, celebrating the country’s top athletes, sports administrators, and officials. Originally scheduled for March 15, the event was postponed due to the tragic death of nine-year-old Chantel Crump. A moment of silence will be held in her memory.

Among the honorees will be four young track athletes—Dwayne Fleming, Ajani Daley, Geolyna Dowdye, and Kasiya Daley—who missed the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima last August due to a registration error. Several national boxers, who excelled at the 2023 OECS Boxing Championships, will also be recognized.

Prominent sports administrator Lynford Inverary, Chief Operations Officer at Cricket West Indies, will be the guest speaker. He is the youngest to act as CEO of Cricket West Indies, appointed in 2024. Last year’s ceremony featured track icon Asafa Powell.

Nominees for Sportsman of the Year include Daren Benta (softball cricket), Cejhae Greene (athletics), and Alzarri Joseph (cricket), while Sportswoman of the Year contenders include Joella Lloyd (athletics) and Ambassador Kimberly Percival (bodybuilding). The Junior Sportsman and Sportswoman categories feature rising talents such as Craig Massiah (basketball) and Tyra Fenton (athletics).

The Coach of the Year nominees include Oswald Baptiste (athletics) and Timothy Thomas (triathlon). In the Mind Sports category, Bernard Joseph (draughts) and Abner Farquhar (chess) are nominated, while the Sports Official category includes T. Jamille Nelson (athletics) and Michael Hamilton (volleyball).

The Lifetime Recognition award will honor Steve Williams for his contributions to bodybuilding. The awards ceremony will begin at 6 pm, with guests asked to be seated by 5:30 pm. This is an invitation-only event.
