Antiguan Keondre Herbert Awarded Prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Antiguan biomedical engineering graduate Keondre Herbert has been selected for the highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program, one of the United States’ most prestigious awards for graduate students in science and engineering.

Herbert was among 2,500 students chosen from approximately 14,000 applicants nationwide for the fellowship, which provides three years of financial support and national recognition to promising researchers.

A 2024 graduate of Columbia University’s Biomedical Engineering program, Herbert completed the neuroengineering track and conducted research in the laboratory of Dr. Barclay Morrison, where he studied the mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injury.

He currently serves as a research associate in Dr. Peter Rudebeck’s laboratory at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His work uses macaque electrophysiology and neuroimaging to investigate how deep brain stimulation can be used to treat psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.

This fall, Herbert will begin doctoral studies in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where he plans to continue his focus on neuroengineering.

The NSF fellowship will support his PhD research, which is expected to concentrate on translational neuroengineering. Herbert is particularly interested in advancing understanding of how neuromodulation therapies affect the brain and helping to make those treatments more effective and accessible for patients.

The Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional potential for research achievements and evaluates applicants based on their intellectual merit and contributions to active scientific research.

Herbert was one of six Columbia Biomedical Engineering students selected for the fellowship this year.
