The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced plans to expand tilapia farming as part of its broader strategy to strengthen food security.

The initiative includes providing farmers with support to develop sustainable water catchments and fish farming systems.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in a recent interview, outlined the government’s vision for promoting aquaculture. “Tilapia farming is a viable and sustainable way to improve local food production,” he said.

“We are working to help farmers create water catchments and establish ponds suitable for raising tilapia.”

The Prime Minister revealed that the pilot phase of the project will be led by Dr. Leandro, who has already been involved in developing successful integrated farming models. The government plans to identify farmers with suitable land and water sources to join the program.

“Dr. Leandro will oversee the first stages of this project, ensuring farmers receive the necessary technical assistance,” Browne added. “This is an opportunity for more people to diversify their income streams while contributing to the nation’s food security.”

Tilapia farming has gained traction in Antigua, with some farms already showcasing impressive results. The Prime Minister highlighted his own farm as an example.

“We’ve seen significant success with tilapia on my farm, where a single pond now holds millions of fish,” he said.

The government is also focused on ensuring the sustainability of water resources used for aquaculture. “The first priority for any successful farming venture in a water-scarce country like Antigua is establishing a reliable water infrastructure,” the Prime Minister explained.

The initiative aligns with the government’s push to reduce reliance on food imports while creating local agricultural opportunities. “We want this project to grow into a nationwide program,” Browne said.

“By supporting small-scale farmers and providing them with the tools and knowledge, we can increase domestic production and reduce pressure on imported food supplies.”

This initiative marks another step in Antigua’s efforts to build a more resilient agricultural sector and enhance the country’s food sovereignty.
