Antigua Government Implementing new measures to speed up overtime payment at the Treasury
Government Plans to Expedite Overtime Payments with Treasury Reclassification
The government of Antigua & Barbuda has announced a strategic shift in how overtime payments for public sector workers will be handled, aiming to address long-standing delays. Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst recently shared that the Cabinet directed the Treasury to reclassify overtime payments from a “vendors” category to the “payroll expense” section, in a move intended to streamline and expedite the process.
Hurst acknowledged that the current system often results in inconsistent payment schedules, with workers sometimes receiving their overtime compensation much later than expected. The reclassification is seen as a means to address these delays, ensuring that overtime payments can be processed promptly after workers complete their extra hours.
“This adjustment by the Cabinet reflects a commitment to fairness for employees who keep essential operations running smoothly,” Hurst stated, commending the decision as a “bold step” toward improving efficiency in government payroll practices.
The Treasury’s implementation of this reclassification is anticipated to make overtime payments more predictable and timely, offering public sector employees the timely compensation they have earned.
