Antigua Funeral Home Introduces Cremation, Offering New End-of-Life Option

Cremation is now available in Antigua and Barbuda for the first time, with Meyer’s Funeral Home introducing the service as an alternative to traditional burial.

Funeral director and owner Stephanie Meyer said the move expands choice for families, noting that public response has been largely positive, though some residents remain cautious about the practice. She stressed that the funeral home continues to offer both burial and cremation to respect cultural and personal preferences.

Cremation involves exposing the body to extreme heat, reducing it to bone fragments that are later processed into ashes. Families may keep the remains in an urn, turn them into memorial jewelry, or scatter them, Meyer explained. Embalming remains optional and is typically chosen when families plan a viewing or full funeral service.

Meyer said cremation is generally less expensive than burial because it eliminates the cost of a casket and some associated services. She also addressed environmental and health concerns, explaining that the cremation equipment is regulated by the Ministry of Health, uses high-temperature filtration, and produces no visible smoke or odor.

Opening the funeral home was a lengthy process, requiring coordination with multiple government agencies and compliance with new regulations, as cremation had not previously been offered in the country. Meyer said ongoing public education will be key as Antiguans and Barbudans become more familiar with the option.
