Media Release: Closed Season for Lobster and Chub Fish-Effective May 1, 2026.
The Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), in collaboration with the Fisheries Division,

Here by informs the public that the annual closed season for spiny lobster and Chub/parrot fish will take effect on May 1, 2026. This measure is mandated under national Fisheries regulations to protect marine resources during their breeding period and ensure long-term sustainability.

▪ Effective Date: May 1, 2026

Species Covered: Spiny Lobster, Chub/Parrotfish

Restrictions:
▪ No catching
▪ No selling
▪ No buying
▪ No possession

These restriction supply to all individuals, restaurants, vendors, and exporters within Antigua & Barbuda.

Closed Season Duration

▪ Spiny Lobster: May1 – June 30, 2026
▪ Chub/Parrotfish: May 1 – July 31, 2026

Enforcement & Penalties

The ABDF and Fisheries Division will conduct compliance checks at ports, restaurants, fish markets, and coastal areas. Violations of the closed season regulations may result in:

▪ Fines up to $50,000.00xcd
▪ Confiscation of catch
▪ Possible prosecution under national fisheries law

Conservation Purpose

▪ Spiny Lobster: Protection during breeding season ensures future stock for local fisheries and exports.
▪ Chub/Parrot fish: Vital for reef health, as they graze on algae and maintain coral balance.
