Antigua and Barbuda’s Oldest Centenarian Hermena Winifred Honored At 104 by the Ministry of Social Transformation
The small community of Jonas Road, All Saints, came alive with celebration as residents and dignitaries gathered to honor Hermena Winifred Goodwin, the nation’s oldest centenarian, who has reached the extraordinary milestone of 104 years.
The event, organized by the Community Development and Citizens Engagement Division under the Ministry of Social Transformation, paid tribute to Goodwin’s remarkable life, accomplishments, and contributions to Antigua and Barbuda.
Born on the historic Betty’s Hope Estate on December 28, 1920, Goodwin’s life reflects resilience, faith, and hard work. Although official records list her birth date as January 10, 1921, due to delayed registration practices, she proudly celebrates her December birthday. From walking miles to learn sewing in St. John’s to becoming a revered seamstress creating wedding gowns and Carnival Queen costumes, Goodwin has left an indelible mark on her community.
In a touching gesture, Goodwin turned her celebration into an opportunity to give back. She donated books, bicycles, and other gifts to students at J.T. Ambrose Primary School in All Saints Village, a school she once influenced during her earlier years. Students expressed heartfelt gratitude, highlighting her lifelong commitment to education and youth empowerment.
Displaying wit and energy that belied her age, Goodwin engaged the audience with quick and humorous responses, embodying a vibrant spirit that infused the ceremony with joy. Her positive outlook and deep community ties shone brightly, inspiring all present.
The celebration was attended by prominent figures, including Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams, his wife Lady Sandra Williams, Senator Michael Joseph, and Permanent Secretary Colin O’Keiffe.
Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams humorously recounted his role as Goodwin’s former doctor, quipping, “I hope I contributed to her long life.” He described her as an inspiration and expressed pride in celebrating her milestone.
Senator Michael Joseph, newly appointed Junior Minister of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and the Environment, expressed admiration for Goodwin’s longevity and joked about returning next year for her 105th celebration. He also praised the ministry’s efforts to honor centenarians, encouraging continued recognition of their contributions.
Community leaders, including Ms. Dale O’Brien and Ms. Sharon-Ann Christmas, commended Goodwin’s resilience and generosity, emphasizing the profound impact of her life and values on younger generations.
Goodwin’s life serves as a beacon of inspiration, characterized by sharp intellect, unwavering faith, and humor. Her timeless advice—“Go to church, read your Bible, and don’t stay out late at night”—resonates as a guide for living a fulfilling life.
The day was a heartfelt tribute to Goodwin’s enduring impact on her family, community, and nation. It was more than a recognition of her years; it was a celebration of her legacy of resilience, generosity, and faith—a life truly well-lived.
