Antigua and Barbuda is being recognized alongside other Caribbean nations during Caribbean American Heritage Month celebrations in Philadelphia, where community leaders are highlighting the contributions of Caribbean nationals to the city’s cultural and civic life.

Danielle Mellanson, president of the United Caribbean Association of Philadelphia (UCAP), said representing Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Kitts and Nevis is a source of pride.

“Being of Caribbean descent and living in Philadelphia means the world to me. I am proud of my heritage and cultural background mixed with a little Philly flair,” Mellanson said.

She noted that Caribbean culture is most visible during the annual Philly Caribbean Carnival, which she said celebrates freedom, resilience, resistance and the shared heritage of Caribbean people.

The feature, published as part of Caribbean American Heritage Month, also profiled leaders representing Guyana and Jamaica, who described the strong presence of their respective communities across Philadelphia through cultural organizations, businesses, churches and public service.

The publication said Caribbean Americans continue to play an important role in shaping Philadelphia’s social, cultural and civic life while preserving the traditions and identities of their home countries.
