Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticised the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), accusing it of failing to act in the best interests of its members.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Mr Browne said the union’s financial mismanagement and weak representation have left workers at a disadvantage.
“The ABWU collects $3.7 million in dues annually, yet its members aren’t seeing the benefits,” Mr Browne said.
“How can you justify losses of over $400,000 on a snackette while your members struggle to make ends meet?”
He also highlighted the union’s inability to secure meaningful wage increases for hospitality workers. “They recently negotiated a $5-per-week raise for hotel workers. That’s $20 a month—barely enough to buy a soda,” he said.
Mr Browne questioned whether the union’s leadership was truly committed to its members’ welfare, suggesting that its financial decisions and lacklustre negotiations indicate otherwise.
“It’s time for workers to demand better. If the union isn’t delivering, they have the right to seek alternatives,” he said.
