ABWU Deputy General Secretary Chester Hughes Graduates with Law Degree in the United Kingdom

Deputy General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), Brother Chester Hughes, graduated on Tuesday with a Bachelor of Laws, LLB (Hons), Upper Second-Class Honours, from Arden University in the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in his academic and professional journey.
Hughes celebrated the occasion with family and friends in the UK following the graduation ceremony, which marked the successful completion of years of dedicated study while continuing to serve in one of the Union’s most senior leadership positions.
Reflecting on his achievement, Hughes described his academic journey as both “challenging and rewarding,” noting that balancing the demands of work, study, and personal life required “discipline, resilience, and determination.”

He explained that while the programme introduced him to many unfamiliar areas of study that initially appeared daunting, each module contributed to expanding his knowledge, strengthening his understanding, and building his confidence. According to Hughes, the experience equipped him with valuable skills and insights while inspiring him to approach the next chapter of his professional journey with “enthusiasm and purpose.”
The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union extends its sincere congratulations to Brother Hughes on this accomplishment, noting that his success is a testament to his dedication to personal growth and his continued commitment to strengthening the labour movement through education and principled leadership.
The Executive, staff, and membership of the Union are confident that this academic achievement will further enhance Hughes’ ability to serve workers with distinction, particularly in the areas of labour law, industrial relations, collective bargaining, and social justice.
The Union further notes that Hughes will depart during the summer to pursue the Bar Training Course, a critical next step in his professional and legal journey. The ABWU wishes him every success as he continues to advance his legal training in service of justice and the working class.
His achievement is not only a source of pride for the Union but also an inspiration to workers across Antigua and Barbuda to pursue lifelong learning and professional excellence.
