Guyanese Man Deported After Completing 18-Year Sentence for Rape in Antigua

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — A 54-year-old Guyanese national convicted of rape has been deported after completing an 18-year prison sentence in Antigua and Barbuda.

Eustace Barry was released from His Majesty’s Prison on Wednesday after serving the custodial sentence imposed by the High Court. Following his release, he was handed over to immigration authorities and removed to his home country of Guyana in keeping with immigration procedures.

As a non-national, Barry was not permitted to remain in Antigua and Barbuda after completing his sentence.

The development was announced by the social media page True Crimes Antigua, which said Barry has been added to its “Predator Awareness” list, an initiative it says is intended to raise public awareness about individuals convicted of sexual offences.

The page also said it plans to continue highlighting other convicted sex offenders as part of its public awareness campaign.

The post noted that while Barry has completed his sentence and left the country, the effects of sexual violence often continue long after an offender’s imprisonment ends, emphasizing the lasting emotional, psychological and physical impact on survivors. It also called for continued support for victims, public education and efforts to prevent sexual violence.
