Antigua and Barbuda has been ranked among the four best Caribbean countries for Americans seeking an affordable and accessible retirement destination.

The country was included in a July 25 Investopedia report alongside the Dominican Republic, The Bahamas and Jamaica. The assessment considered affordability, residency options, healthcare, accessibility, quality of life and governance.

Investopedia highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s English-speaking population, established infrastructure and expatriate communities in areas such as Jolly Harbour and English Harbour.

The report said retirees can pursue permanent residency or obtain citizenship through the Citizenship by Investment Programme. The programme requires a minimum contribution of US$230,000 or an approved real estate investment of at least US$300,000.

Antigua and Barbuda’s tax structure was also identified as an advantage. The country does not impose personal income, capital gains, wealth or inheritance taxes.

However, the report noted that living expenses can be high because many goods are imported and purchasing property can be costly.

The country’s healthcare system was described as one of the strongest in the Eastern Caribbean, with major services centred at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in St. John’s.

Investopedia said its rankings were based on research conducted between Jan. 30 and Feb. 9, using 38 criteria and more than 1,500 data points. Affordability carried the greatest weight, followed by residency benefits, healthcare, accessibility, quality of life and governance.
