VIDEO: Police Officers Stage Sit-In Demanding Emergency Medical Evacuation for Injured Colleague

Police officers gathered at Police Headquarters on Thursday in a show of solidarity with Senior Sergeant Benjamin, demanding that the government urgently arrange a medical evacuation for the injured officer, who they say is at risk of losing his leg.

According to the report, the officers staged a sit-in after learning that Benjamin, who was seriously injured while on duty after being struck by a truck on Valley Road near the Golden Grove area, has not yet been transported overseas for specialized medical treatment.

Speaking from Police Headquarters, George Wenner said the rank and file believe the government has failed to act with the urgency the situation requires.

“They are standing in solidarity with their fellow officer… insisting that he be flown out,” Wenner said, adding that officers fear Benjamin could lose his leg if treatment is delayed.

Wenner contrasted Benjamin’s situation with the government’s response in another high-profile medical case, claiming authorities quickly arranged multiple medical evacuation flights for a former government official while no similar action has been taken for the injured police officer.

He argued that police officers routinely place their lives at risk in the line of duty, including during national security operations and preparations for major events such as the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), and deserve the same level of support when injured.

Calling directly on Health Minister Michael Joseph, Wenner urged the government to arrange an emergency medivac without further delay.

“We’re calling on Minister Joseph… to immediately, post haste, arrange a medivac to fly Senior Sergeant Benjamin out to seek the necessary medical care,” he said.

The protesting officers indicated they will continue pressing the government until arrangements are made for Benjamin to receive the overseas treatment they say he urgently requires.
