Dear Members of the Guild Council,

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in student leadership at The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus. As you officially assume office, I extend my warmest congratulations and welcome to each of you.

The confidence placed in us by the student body is both an honour and a solemn responsibility. We have not been entrusted merely with positions, but with the duty to advocate, serve, and create meaningful change in the lives of our fellow students. The offices we now hold are not symbols of status or prestige. They are instruments of service.

I therefore charge each of you to embrace the principles of servant leadership. Leadership is not about being seen. It is about seeing others. It is not about being served. It is about serving. It is not about titles, authority, or recognition. It is about action, accountability, and sacrifice.

There will be moments when leadership will require you to give more than is convenient. There will be times when the work will go unnoticed, when difficult decisions must be made, and when personal interests must be set aside for the greater good of the student body. In those moments, remember why you sought this office. Remember that every decision we make should be guided by the question: “How does this improve the lives of the students we represent?”

As a Council, let us commit ourselves to integrity, transparency, professionalism, and unity of purpose. Let us be present for our constituents, responsive to their concerns, and relentless in our pursuit of meaningful outcomes. Let us not measure success by promises made, but by promises kept.

The year ahead presents tremendous opportunities to leave our campus better than we found it. Let us therefore lead with courage, work with humility, and serve with conviction.

I look forward to working alongside each of you as we write the next chapter in the history of the Guild of Students.

Welcome to office, and may your tenure be marked by purpose, service, and impact.

God Bless the Guild of Students.
God Bless Our Campus.

Sincerely,

Jake Taylor
