PM Says ABLP Victory Is “Not a Gift” but a Mandate for Better Governance

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his government will not treat its decisive election victory as an opportunity for complacency, promising instead to govern with greater accountability and responsibility during its new term in office.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service Sunday at the St. John’s Pentecostal Church House of Restoration, Browne told supporters, clergy and government officials that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s resounding election win should be viewed as a renewed mandate to serve the public more faithfully.

“We do not see this resounding victory as a gift,” Browne said. “We do not see it as the opportunity to be slothful or for that matter to abuse public resources.”

The Prime Minister said the administration instead sees the result as an opportunity to improve governance and strengthen efforts to empower citizens.

“We see this as an opportunity to serve you more faithfully, to provide even better governance than we provided during the last approximately 12 years,” Browne said.

His remarks came as the government and supporters gathered for a national thanksgiving service following the ABLP’s fourth consecutive election victory.

Browne also reflected on the campaign period, thanking supporters, candidates and what he described as “prayer warriors” who he said prayed for peaceful elections and the party’s success.

The Prime Minister said the party had endured “misinformation, disinformation, lies” and “character assassination” during the campaign but remained focused on securing victory for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

He told the congregation that the government’s long-term ambition remains transforming Antigua and Barbuda into a “lifestyle superpower,” while creating greater opportunities in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and ownership for citizens.

Browne also used the occasion to call for national unity after the election, saying political divisions should not define the country moving forward.

“So let us not move forward as different political institutions, different religious denominations, but as reborn Antiguans and Barbudans who are working harmoniously to build this country,” he said.

The thanksgiving service blended worship, scripture readings and political reflection, with ministers and church leaders repeatedly emphasizing gratitude, service and national renewal.
