Sir Molwyn Joseph Backs Dr. Philmore Benjamin as Successor in St. Mary’s North

Outgoing St. Mary’s North MP Sir Molwyn Joseph has given his full endorsement to Dr. Philmore Benjamin as his successor, signaling continuity in representation for the constituency as he retires from active politics.
Speaking during his final address in Parliament, Joseph made his position clear, offering unequivocal support for Benjamin’s candidacy.
“I am in total support… Dr. Benjamin. Total support,” Joseph said.
He added that the transition would not mark a break in service to constituents, indicating that both men would work together moving forward.
“He and I will work together to continue the tradition of high service,” he told the House.
Joseph also addressed how Benjamin was selected, pushing back against any perception that the process lacked credibility.
“He was selected on the basis of a scientific poll,” he said.
The veteran parliamentarian, who served more than four decades in public life, used his final contribution to reassure residents that representation in St. Mary’s North would remain grounded in experience and community connection.
His endorsement is expected to carry weight within the constituency, where Joseph built a long-standing political base over multiple election cycles.
While stepping away from Parliament, Joseph has indicated he will remain active in public life and continue supporting the constituency and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.
The move positions Benjamin as the clear political heir in St. Mary’s North ahead of the next general election, with the backing of one of the country’s longest-serving MPs.
