Following activities in Saint Lucia, the Next Generation Sweet Potato Production in the Caribbean Project continued in Antigua and Barbuda with hands-on field training in the 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.
After a virtual training on genetic resources, 15 technicians from several departments within the Ministry of Agriculture, including technicians CARDI, applied their knowledge in practical sessions – working directly with local varieties to identify and document key traits.
Antigua and Barbuda currently has approximately 73 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 19 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 International Potato Center (𝐂𝐈𝐏).
The project, implemented by IICA in collaboration with national Ministries of Agriculture and CARDI, is funded through the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, facilitated by FAO and co-funded by the European Union.
Through this initiative, participants are better equipped to identify local genetic resources and support farmers in preserving high-performing, climate-resilient varieties strengthening food and nutrition security across the Caribbean.
