West Indies spin stars seal 30-run win over England at T20 World Cup

West Indies’ spinners inspired a 30-run victory over group favourites England at the T20 World Cup in Mumbai, strengthening their position after two matches.
Asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium, West Indies stumbled early to 77-4 before Sherfane Rutherford revived the innings with an unbeaten 76. He struck seven of the side’s 13 sixes as they posted 196-6, with Jason Holder adding a rapid 33 from 17 balls. Adil Rashid was England’s standout bowler, taking 2-16.
England began brightly in reply, racing to 67-1 in the powerplay after Phil Salt plundered 24 runs in one over. But the introduction of spin shifted the momentum.
Roston Chase (2-29) and Gudakesh Motie (3-33) claimed regular wickets as England faltered in the chase. When captain Harry Brook fell with 66 needed from the final six overs, the pressure told.
Two sharp run-outs further dented England’s hopes before Rashid was caught on the boundary, sealing victory with six balls remaining.
Rutherford, named player of the match, said targeting Rashid had been key. “I’ve put in a lot of work coming into the World Cup and I can score runs when I play with a clear mind,” he said. “We were maybe 10 runs short, but the bowlers did well on a big stage.”
