OPINION: No Administration Is Perfect – But This One Is Close

In every democracy, criticism is not only inevitable, it is necessary. Governments must be questioned, challenged, and held to account. No serious supporter of good governance pretends that any administration is flawless. But fairness demands balance. When we step back from the noise, the personalities, and the partisan talking points, one truth becomes difficult to ignore: while imperfect, the Gaston Browne led ABLP administration stands among the most competent, resilient, and results-driven governments Antigua and Barbuda has seen in the modern era.
This is not blind loyalty. It is an assessment grounded in outcomes, context, and comparative reasoning.
Governing in Difficult Times, Not Ideal Conditions
It is easy to govern when the global economy is booming, tourism is surging, and external shocks are minimal. The true test of leadership comes during a crisis. Since assuming office, the ABLP administration has navigated Antigua and Barbuda through a period marked by economic vulnerability, climate threats, and one of the most disruptive global pandemics in modern history.
COVID-19 alone crippled tourism dependent economies worldwide. Entire nations collapsed under the strain. Yet Antigua and Barbuda not only survived, but recovered faster than many peers. Borders were reopened carefully, jobs were preserved where possible, and social support mechanisms were deployed to cushion the most vulnerable. While no response was perfect, the alternative; economic freefall and social chaos was avoided.
Leadership is not about avoiding storms; it is about steering through them.
Economic Stability and Strategic Recovery
One of the most underappreciated achievements of the Gaston Browne administration is its handling of the economy. Upon entering office, the government inherited severe fiscal challenges, high debt, constrained revenue, and limited fiscal space. Instead of retreating into austerity that would have punished ordinary citizens, the administration pursued debt restructuring, strategic investment, and revenue-generating initiatives.

Today, Antigua and Barbuda enjoys improved creditworthiness, renewed investor confidence, and a more diversified economic outlook. Major infrastructure projects, port modernization, airport expansion, and hotel developments are not cosmetic achievements, they create jobs, stimulate local business, and expand long-term revenue capacity.
Economic management is rarely glamorous, but it is foundational. And by most objective measures, the country is on firmer ground than it was a decade ago.
Housing, Land, and Empowerment of Ordinary People
A government’s priorities are often revealed in who benefits from its policies. The ABLP administration has made housing and land ownership central to its social agenda. Thousands of citizens have gained access to affordable homes, land distribution programs, and opportunities that were previously out of reach for working-class families and young people.
Critics may downplay these initiatives, but to the single mother who moved from uncertainty into stable housing, or the young family that finally owns land, these policies are transformative. Nation-building is not only about balance sheets, it is about dignity and opportunity.
Investment in Health, Education, and Social Protection
Healthcare and education remain pillars of sustainable development, and despite limited resources, meaningful investments have been made. From upgrades in healthcare infrastructure to expanded access to education and training, the administration has demonstrated a consistent understanding that human capital is Antigua and Barbuda’s greatest asset.
Social protection programs, pensions, and assistance for the elderly and vulnerable have not been abandoned in the name of “fiscal discipline.” Instead, the government has attempted, imperfectly but sincerely to balance compassion with responsibility.
Addressing the Critics Honestly
There are those who disagree with the administration, and their voices matter. Some argue that the government is too aggressive in its tone. Others take issue with specific policy decisions, land use disputes, or governance style. These concerns should not be dismissed. Democracy thrives on scrutiny.
But disagreement does not equal failure.
Too often, critics conflate dissatisfaction with total incompetence, or mistake loud opposition for better alternatives. The question voters must ask is not “Is this administration perfect?” but rather: Who is best equipped to govern right now? Who has demonstrated the capacity to manage crisis, grow the economy, and protect national interests?
On that question, the evidence continues to favor the ABLP.
Leadership on the Regional and International Stage
Under Gaston Browne, Antigua and Barbuda has not been silent or sidelined internationally. The country has asserted itself on climate justice, reparations, debt reform, and the vulnerabilities of small island developing states. This global advocacy matters. It brings visibility, partnerships, and leverage that small nations cannot afford to forfeit.
Strong leadership abroad strengthens sovereignty at home.
Progress, Not Perfection
No administration is perfect and no honest supporter would claim otherwise. Mistakes have been made, communication could improve, and some policies warrant refinement. But progress should never be overshadowed by perfectionism.
When measured against inherited challenges, global disruptions, and realistic alternatives, the Gaston Browne administration has delivered stability, growth, and direction. That does not mean complacency is acceptable, it means continuity matters.
Why Re-Elect the ABLP?
Because governance is about results, not rhetoric.
Because experience matters in uncertain times.
Because progress, though uneven, is visible.
Because dismantling what works in pursuit of untested promises is a risk Antigua and Barbuda cannot afford.
Re-electing the ABLP is not a declaration that everything is perfect. It is a recognition that this administration is close, close enough to trust with the next chapter of the nation’s development.
And in politics, as in life, close, when paired with accountability and improvement is often exactly what progress looks like.
