Dominica signals visa-free entry for Dominican Republic citizens

Dominica is preparing to ease entry rules for citizens of the Dominican Republic, with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirming that visa requirements will be removed.

The prime minister revealed the plan during a New Year media interview, saying he had consistently opposed the existing restrictions and wanted a more open immigration system.

Mr Skerrit said Dominica’s visa policy was at odds with its own calls for visa-free access overseas, arguing that fairness should guide regional travel arrangements.

He also raised the possibility of extending similar treatment to Haitian nationals, condemning what he described as long-standing prejudice and warning against associating an entire population with criminal activity.

The prime minister said Caribbean countries had a moral responsibility to Haiti, citing its historic role in the abolition of slavery.

No date has been announced for the policy change, but Mr Skerrit’s comments suggest a wider reassessment of visa requirements and regional mobility.
