Health officials say work on the country’s new renal centre is expected to be completed by April, marking a major step in expanding dialysis services and improving care for patients with chronic kidney disease.

Speaking at a recent media briefing, Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph said construction of the facility is being led by the Public Works Department and is now focused on completing the physical structure to allow for the installation of equipment already secured by the government.

Joseph said the renal centre will allow patients to receive the full course of dialysis treatment locally, reducing the strain on existing services and improving continuity of care. He described the project as a significant upgrade in how renal care is delivered in Antigua and Barbuda.

Health officials said all major dialysis equipment has already been acquired and is awaiting installation once the facility is ready. They said the focus is now on completing the building to ensure the centre can become operational as soon as possible after construction concludes.

The minister noted that expanding renal services is part of a broader effort to strengthen specialized healthcare locally, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad and improving access to life-sustaining care.

Officials said further updates will be provided as construction progresses and installation timelines are finalized, with the goal of bringing the renal centre into service shortly after completion.
