Sickle Cell Unit Near Opening as Doctors Complete Overseas Training
Antigua and Barbuda’s long-awaited sickle cell unit is nearing opening, with health officials saying infrastructure work is largely complete and doctors are undergoing overseas training ahead of the start of services.
Hospital Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis said the facility has been refurbished, painted and outfitted with beds, while procurement of key equipment is underway. She said the focus has now shifted to ensuring staff are fully trained and operational systems are in place before patients are admitted.
According to Belle-Jarvis, two physicians have been identified for the unit and are receiving specialized training in sickle cell disease management. She said the preparation includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on exposure at established sickle cell centres in the region, allowing doctors to observe patient flow, crisis management and long-term care models.

Health officials said the doctors are expected to undergo training at a sickle cell unit in Jamaica, followed by additional clinical exposure in Martinique, to broaden their experience before services begin locally. Nursing staff and a clinical coordinator are also being finalized to support operations.
Belle-Jarvis said the unit is designed to provide comprehensive care, extending beyond pain management to include education, wellness support and early intervention, including counseling and newborn screening follow-up.
She added that policies governing patient flow are being finalized, including protocols for patients who experience complications outside regular operating hours and require hospital admission.
Officials said the unit is expected to open within weeks once training is completed and final operational approvals are in place, marking a significant expansion in specialized care for people living with sickle cell disease in Antigua and Barbuda.
