A leadership election within Antigua and Barbuda’s Spanish community will go ahead on January 11 without opposition after no challengers registered by the deadline, long-time community representative Alex Martinez said.

Martinez confirmed the vote will proceed unopposed, despite efforts to attract other candidates.
The election follows years of internal controversy, with some members of the Spanish-speaking community questioning Martinez’s legitimacy and arguing he was never formally elected or appointed. Those concerns prompted calls for a transparent, democratic process to determine community representation.
