A 19-year-old man has been jailed for one year after admitting to possessing a modified flare gun discovered during a police patrol in the Deep Bay area.

Jeremy Floyd was arrested on Dec. 28 when officers stopped a vehicle and recovered a black-and-orange altered flare gun hidden under the rear seat. He later pleaded guilty to the offense.

Three other men detained during the stop, all from Greenbay, denied the charges. Prosecutors subsequently dropped the cases against them.

Acting Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel imposed the sentence on Jan. 6, citing sentencing guidelines from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and noting that the weapon had been held for several months. The court also considered Floyd’s early guilty plea and cooperation with investigators, which reduced the sentence.

Character references described Floyd as a working young man who supports his family and is involved in the fishing community. The court credited him for six days already served and ordered the weapon forfeited to police.
