PM Warns Against Incitement After Fire Destroys APUA Materials

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that political incitement and lawless rhetoric can create conditions that lead to criminal acts, as investigations continue into a fire that destroyed fibre-optic materials belonging to the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne addressed public commentary surrounding the incident, cautioning that while investigations must determine who is criminally responsible, leaders and public figures have a duty not to encourage disorder or confrontation with state institutions.

The prime minister said that incitement to defy authority or undermine enforcement agencies can fuel lawlessness and embolden individuals to commit acts of vandalism or destruction. He stressed that such behaviour threatens national infrastructure and public safety.

Browne stopped short of assigning direct responsibility to any political figure for the fire but made clear that those who promote unrest must understand the wider consequences of their words. He said political disagreements should be pursued through lawful and democratic means, not actions that risk damage to public assets.

The fire destroyed fibre-optic materials critical to telecommunications infrastructure, prompting concern about service disruptions and national security implications. Browne said the government is treating the matter seriously and has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

He reiterated that the rule of law must prevail and that no cause justifies the destruction of public property, adding that accountability will follow once investigations are complete.

Authorities continue to probe the incident, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
