National leaders joined worshippers at the Salvation Army Citadel on Sunday for a special service held ahead of V.C. Bird Day, which will be observed on December 9 in honour of National Hero Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr.

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and other dignitaries attended the service, which combined Advent worship with a tribute to the country’s first prime minister.

Hymns, scripture readings and prayers centered on themes of peace, gratitude and national unity.

Major Malvi Graham delivered the reflection on Bird’s life, focusing on his longstanding service within the Salvation Army.

She described him as “a man after God’s own heart” who maintained humility despite high office, remained faithful in worship and giving, and frequently brought others to church.

She recalled that after political victories, Bird would attend worship accompanied by members of his Cabinet, underscoring his strong ties to the congregation.

Scripture readings were presented by the Governor General and the Prime Minister as part of the Advent observance, and retired Salvation Army officers lit the candles of hope and peace.

Worship leaders encouraged continued prayer for the nation, its government and families facing illness or loss.

During announcements, congregants were reminded of the official V.C. Bird Day ceremony scheduled for Tuesday morning at the V.C. Bird bust in Market Square.

The Salvation Army also outlined its upcoming Christmas initiatives, including visits to the elderly, the hospitalized and the prison, as well as food-hamper packing and distribution.

Members of the public were encouraged to support the annual kettle appeal amid what organizers described as growing community need.

The service closed with prayers of thanksgiving and calls for continued unity across Antigua and Barbuda — qualities speakers said reflected Bird’s enduring legacy.
