The government’s planned Heavy-Duty Operators’ Training Academy is a step closer to becoming a reality, with its first meeting held on Tuesday with key stakeholders.

The academy aims to teach men and women how to operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, and cranes.

This initiative was included in last week’s Cabinet Notes and was chaired by Minister of Works, Maria Bird-Browne.

In attendance were Education Minister Daryll Matthew, representatives from the Ministry of Works, the Harrison Centre, the Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education (ABICE), and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board.

Senator Clement Antonio, Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry of Works and Housing, led the discussions and emphasized the productive nature of the talks.

Antonio, who oversees the establishment of the academy, confirmed that a preliminary curriculum is being developed. He explained, “We have identified a training ground and trainers from the Ministry of Works.”

The curriculum will consist of two parts— the theory, which focuses on safety and mechanical issues, and the practical aspect of equipment operation. Antonio mentioned that ABICE had begun some research and is already working to secure necessary trainers.

The academy is expected to welcome its first group of students in January 2025, with the application process set to open soon.

Antonio praised the government for backing this initiative, which will provide certification in heavy-duty equipment operations, helping to address the gap in this field.
