House Passes Firearms Amendment Bill 2024, Imposing Tougher Penalties for Gun-Related Offenses

The House of Representatives has passed the Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2024, which introduces tougher penalties for breaches under the existing Firearms Act Cap 271.

The bill targets offenses such as unlicensed possession, carrying firearms or ammunition in designated public spaces, unlawful sale or transfer, possession with intent to harm, and the manufacturing, importation, exportation, and transshipment of firearms and ammunition.

During the debate, Attorney General MP Hon. Steadroy Benjamin, Leader of the Opposition MP Hon. Jamale Pringle, MP Hon. Trevor Walker, and MP Hon. Asot Michael all provided their viewpoints on the proposed changes.
