Antigua and Barbuda to Test Tsunami Readiness in 2025 Caribe Wave Drill

Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are set to participate in the 2025 Caribe Wave Tsunami Exercise on Thursday, 20 March, at 11:00 a.m. The annual drill, coordinated by the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), aims to test the country’s emergency response in the event of a tsunami.

According to NODS, the exercise will begin with the activation of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) system, followed by the blaring of sirens across the island. Participants, including schools, businesses, and community groups, will evacuate to designated safe areas once the alert is given.

As part of the drill, groups will be required to account for all their participants upon reaching the safe zones. NODS evaluators will also be present to assess the evacuation process and provide feedback on areas for improvement.

Caribe Wave is a regional initiative designed to strengthen tsunami preparedness across the Caribbean. By taking part in the exercise, Antigua and Barbuda joins other nations in enhancing public awareness and ensuring effective disaster response strategies.

NODS is encouraging the public to take the exercise seriously, as regular drills help build resilience and can save lives in a real emergency.

The exercise will conclude once all participants have successfully reached their designated safe areas, with officials reviewing the overall response to refine future preparedness efforts.
