Antigua and Barbuda saw a significant reduction in fire-related incidents in 2024, with total fire calls dropping by 18% compared to 2023. Fire Chief Vivian Parker shared the statistics during a press conference hosted by the police administration.
The Fire Department responded to 336 calls in 2024, down from 409 in 2023. Serious fires accounted for 264 incidents in 2024, a notable 30% decline from the previous year’s 375. However, the category of “Other Fires” saw a sharp increase, rising by 118% to 72 incidents from just 33 in 2023.
House fires decreased by 26%, from 88 in 2023 to 65 in 2024, while rubbish fires also saw a 26% drop, from 74 to 55. Vehicle fires remained relatively stable, rising slightly from 37 in 2023 to 38 in 2024.
Chief Parker expressed gratitude to the government for providing critical resources that have strengthened the Fire Department. She highlighted the anticipated arrival of five new fire trucks, which are expected to enhance the department’s capabilities further.
