Dogs and Cats of Antigua (DACOA), a non-profit organisation established in 2015, has announced the recipients of its 2024 Hero Awards. The ceremony, which honours exceptional contributions to animal welfare, will take place on Sunday, 2 February, at Julee’s on Tanner Street, St. John’s.

This year’s awards celebrate the efforts of Warren Franken and Dinah Whittier, whose tireless dedication to improving the lives of animals on the island has made a profound impact.

Warren Franken, a long-time advocate for animal welfare, is described as a man whose kindness towards animals is “a natural extension of his character.” He is the proud owner of 12 rescue dogs, including one requiring special care due to paralysis.

Despite his personal commitments, Franken devotes significant time to rescuing and rehabilitating stray dogs, saving countless lives. His efforts include transporting sick animals to veterinary care and leading fundraising initiatives for DACOA. He is also at the forefront of a project to construct upgraded pens at the organisation’s sanctuary.

“We deeply appreciate Warren’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare,” a DACOA representative said.

Dinah Whittier, who recently relocated to Antigua from Trinidad, has made a remarkable contribution to the local animal welfare scene. In an extraordinary gesture of care, Whittier ensured all 12 of her dogs accompanied her on the move to Antigua.

Since her arrival, she has been instrumental in various initiatives, including fostering animals, arranging adoptions, and sponsoring sanctuary upgrades. Each week, Whittier goes the extra mile to cook meals for 85 dogs at the sanctuary, ensuring they receive a home-cooked meal.

Her dedication has been described as “a testament to her generosity and unwavering commitment.”

The Hero Awards, now in their third year, aim to spotlight the efforts of those who go above and beyond for animals in Antigua. DACOA hopes the event will inspire greater appreciation for animal welfare on the island, where dogs and cats are often undervalued.

The organisation is inviting the community to celebrate the accomplishments of Franken and Whittier at the awards ceremony.

Tickets for the event are available by contacting 714 6793. Further information about DACOA’s mission can be found on their website, www.dogsandcatsantigua.com.
