China’s President Xi Jinping and U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump Discuss Strengthening Relations-By Petra Williams
On January 17, 2025, three days before Donald J. Trump’s return to the White House, China’s President Xi Jinping engaged in a phone call with the U.S. President-Elect. This marked their first direct communication since Trump left office in 2021 and centered on fostering stronger bilateral ties amidst global challenges.
President Xi congratulated Trump on his reelection and emphasized the importance of maintaining strong interactions between the two nations. He expressed optimism about advancing China-U.S. relations under Trump’s new presidency, describing it as a “good start” for cooperation. Xi highlighted the shared goal of enhancing citizens’ welfare in both countries, while acknowledging differences in national conditions and philosophies. He stressed the importance of respecting each other’s core interests and major concerns as a basis for finding solutions to disagreements.
President-Elect Trump thanked Xi for the congratulations and underscored the value he places on U.S.-China relations. He expressed enthusiasm for continued dialogue and indicated interest in meeting Xi soon. Trump later shared on his Truth Social platform, “It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together. We discussed balancing trade, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe.”
The conversation took place against the backdrop of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a congressional ban on TikTok, owned by a Chinese parent company, citing privacy and content manipulation concerns.
According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, the leaders also exchanged views on Taiwan, trade, the Ukraine crisis, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and other critical international and regional issues. Both sides agreed to establish a strategic communication channel to facilitate regular discussions on matters of shared interest. Chinese foreign affairs officials expressed optimism about managing differences and promoting healthier bilateral ties.
Given their extensive common interests and broad space for cooperation, establishing more friendly relations between China and the United States would be a boon to global affairs. This would result in shared prosperity for the good of the two countries and the world.
Vice President Han Zheng will represent China as Xi’s special representative at Trump’s inauguration.
