Governor General Commends Wehner’s Role in Strengthening Democracy
St. John’s, Antigua – His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, has commended George Wehner for his contributions to the democratic process during the recent by-election in the Constituency of St. Peter. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Honourable Rawdon Turner as Minister for Social and Urban Transformation, Sir Rodney highlighted the importance of opposition candidates in fostering healthy competition and accountability within the nation’s democracy.
“The presence of candidates like Mr. George Wehner, who contested the by-election, exemplifies the healthy competition that strengthens our democracy,” the Governor General stated. He emphasized the vital role opposition plays in ensuring balanced governance and holding the government accountable.
The by-election, prompted by the passing of former MP Asot Michael, saw the people of St. Peter express their confidence in Rawdon Turner, marking what the Governor General called “an important moment for our democracy.” Turner’s victory ushers in a new chapter for the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, a portfolio the Governor General described as critical to addressing the nation’s most pressing challenges.
In his remarks, Sir Rodney acknowledged Turner’s extensive experience as an architect, contractor, and former CEO of the National Housing and Urban Renewal Company Ltd. He expressed confidence that Turner’s leadership would drive innovation and inclusive development in urban transformation and social welfare.
The Governor General urged unity and collaboration in the aftermath of the electoral process, calling on all political leaders and citizens to focus on the collective development of Antigua and Barbuda. “Now that the electoral process has concluded and the results have been declared, it is imperative that we come together, beyond our political differences, to focus on the collective development of our nation,” he said.
As Turner takes up his new responsibilities, the Governor General stressed the need for humility, empathy, and responsiveness in leadership to address the needs of all citizens and craft lasting solutions for the country’s progress.
