A maritime tragedy unfolded today as the Russian-flagged cargo ship URSA Major sank 40 miles off Cartagena (Murcia) following an engine room explosion.

The vessel, flying the Antiguan and Barbudan flag, carried 16 crew members; 14 were rescued and transferred to Spain, while two remain missing, according to the Cartagena Maritime Authority.

The rescue, coordinated by Salvamento Marítimo’s Clara Campoamor ship, began after a distress beacon was triggered at 12:15 PM.

Nearby vessel Oslo Carrier III first responded, locating the explosion and aiding in rescue efforts.

The Red Cross deployed healthcare and psychosocial teams to support survivors.

The operation was later handed over to a Russian Navy vessel, with the Spanish Navy’s Serviola on standby to address potential environmental impacts.

The URSA Major, built in 2009, had been en route from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, scheduled to arrive on January 22.
